Contains Art is an arts venue based in the small harbour town of Watchet in West Somerset. It is built from three refurbished shipping containers that were transformed into a gallery and four studios by a group of dedicated volunteers in the early summer of 2013.
Contains Art has a dual role—to meet the needs of our community and to pursue artistic ambition. West Somerset has the lowest social mobility in the UK. We firmly believe art has a vital role in changing that. To do this, we deliver a diverse and exciting programme of exhibitions and events that bring extraordinary practice to this small isolated part of the country.
The gallery is open from Easter to October half term, usually Wednesday through Sunday and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, though in holiday-time we may be open every day, so do please check. Also be aware that we sometimes close for a few days to take down an exhibition and put up another one, so please check the exhibition calendar for what is on to avoid disappointment.
The studio holders also welcome visitors but please bear in mind they are working artists and may not always welcome the interruption. We ask that you be courteous and knock before entering any studio.
On top of our exhibition programme, we run regular community events and workshops that are free to attend, and many community projects. For example, in 2017, over 100 volunteers worked together with us to deliver a powerful heritage-arts cross-over project that explored the social legacy of the closure of the town’s main industry. This is the kind of work at which we excel—it builds connections, brings people together and harnesses social energy in a creative way, often across generations.
We welcome visits from groups and schools, but please call in advance to let us know you are coming.
